approached by the CIA and assisted by them, opened an investment business in Boston
Massachusetts.
A Russian undercover agent was now a member of the CIA Mission Support Directorate, a
paymaster working for Langley.’
‘Does Langley know any of this?
‘I don’t think so. At the moment they probably think they made a poor choice enlisting someone
who turned out to be nothing more than a blackmailer and are happy that he is lying at the bottom
of the Thames.’
‘I’m sorry to interrupt, go on.’
‘On the face of it there would be little new information he could provide, he mainly serviced the
cities and countries where CIA agents were already active but Russians are very patient and they
knew that every time a large amount of money was forwarded it signalled increased activity in that
area. They also expected Arnold to inform them when any new accounts were opened which would
signal new activity but Arnold had three Masters, the CIA, FSB in Moscow and the Mafia bookies.
Arnold was a compulsive gambler and got really over his head in debt to them.
He began skimming the accounts and by complicated accounting, he had managed to hide his
activities from Langley. But he knew this couldn’t go on indefinitely and when Langley eventually
caught up with him then not only would there be repercussions from them but his Russian masters
would be a little upset that he had blown a well entrenched undercover position and the blowback
might even reveal the Russian double in Langley who had set up Arnold’s office. The Mafia bookies
are notoriously short on patience and his gambling debts were escalating. Arnold was a very
frightened man his life was being threatened from three fronts and he was desperate for a way out.
It came from an unexpected quarter.
Paymasters never know whom they are paying, they are only told the method of payment. It can be
direct to a bank account in the name of a fictitious business or sometimes a fictitious individual to
justify Arnolds Investment advisor cover. You already know that, of course.
Arnold received instructions to pay a large amount of money, seven million dollars, into a new
account with a private bank in London for a company called London Property Invest. He was also
sent a memo which clearly showed, according to Warner, the money he was to send to London was
to support covert operations in Guatemala ’
George stood and walked to the window staring at the Park opposite. Do you have the memo?
‘No, and I don’t think he has it either.’
‘Did he say where this large amount of money originated?’
