George stood up and went to his filing cabinet to return with two plastic tumblers and a bottle of
            Black Label.

‘I think we both need this.’ He filled the two tumblers and sat on the sofa next to me.

‘Are you still spending nights on your office couch?’

I nodded. ‘Yes but not so often.’

We both drank half our tumbler in silence.

‘So what happened about the blackmail?’

‘I think Arnold was genuinely considering a blackmail attempt but he knew he had to have a get out
plan. If his blackmail succeeded, he would have to disappear very quickly and I do mean disappear.
There would be three countries security services and the Mafia looking for him and that was when
he received his second piece of good fortune in the person of Mick Hagley. Hagley was a convicted
felon who had served time in prison but was now working for British Intelligence as an Assist in
New York. He was assigned to Anne to do her legwork in America.

Hagley managed to trace Warner and discovered the whereabouts of his office in Boston. He broke

in and rifling through Warners accounts, reached the inevitable conclusion that this was a CIA
paymasters office run by a swindler. Hagley knew that Warner was in a very safe position to run a
fraud business and make a lot of money and if ever he was caught out then the CIA would get him
out of the mess to protect themselves. Hagley informed Warner that he now had a partner and
took over the blackmail scam, in fact Warner says he took over the whole business.

He also decided to take over Arnold’s identity and went to London to conduct the blackmail
himself. Arnold unhesitatingly agreed. Arnold could see how he could extricate himself from his

dangerous existence. He reasoned that anyone attempting blackmail of British and American
Security without an escape plan would eventually finish dead. Even if Hagley survived, he would no
longer have his own identity he would now be Arnold Warner and when he returned to Boston the
Mafia would be waiting. Hagley had adopted his identity so he became Hagley. When the dust
finally settled, the CIA, the FBI, the British Secret Intelligence Service and the Boston Mafia would
believe him dead and he would be safe living in New York as Mick Hagley.

Hagley came to London and arranged a meeting with whomever he was blackmailing.’

‘Do we know who that was?

‘No we don’t. You see Hagley was double-crossed and delivered into the hands of a CIA special
            operations unit.

They tortured him and questioned him about the Guatemala memo but he knew nothing about a
memo, real or otherwise. He eventually told them about the post box account he had opened at
the Chiswick Business Accommodation Bureau. They went there to check if he had posted the
