‘Well no, but it would have been well camouflaged.’
‘Yes I know that but did he say it was from Langley? Was he specific about the money’s origin or did
he let you assume it was from Langley?’
‘No, he didn’t specify it but I assumed, took it for granted really, it must have come from there.
Where else?’
George turned back from the window and retook his seat.
‘It just occurs to me that if he was set up by the Russians as a CIA paymaster he might be a
paymaster for them as well. The FSB also need to fund their operations.’
‘You mean like a FSB operation in Guatemala?’ I suggested.
George shrugged his shoulders. ‘The Kremlin would much prefer, I am sure, their version of
communism to take hold rather than the Chinese having control over a part of South America.’
‘Hmm. That could be the answer to something else that has been bothering me.’
‘Go on.’ George prompted.
‘When he told me he was scared for his life that the Mafia would kill him if he didn’t pay his
gambling debts, I believed him. After all, it needs to be a pretty big incentive to consider
blackmailing MI6. However, even though he had regularly skimmed accounts he never touched a
cent of this money. He did as he had been told and paid the money into the London bank the very
next day.’
‘How do you know this?’
‘He had his accounts book in Hagley’s flat. It was in the same draw where he kept a lady’s pistol. I
let him keep the pistol but I took the book and the bullets. The question is why didn’t he just take
the money and run. This was the largest single amount he had ever been sent. He could have paid
off the bookies and gone to live in South America in comfort for the rest of his life. Instead, he gets
the bank in London to give him the telephone number for the London Property Invest contact and
tries to blackmail whoever was at the other end. If the money had come from Russia then he was
obviously more scared of them than he was the Mafia or the CIA. GCHQ intercepted his calls and
they were forwarded to my wife who was now working for Barker. She reported them and Warner
was now on MI6 radar.’
‘Anne? I had no idea she was working for Barker. Could all this have something to do with her
death? Had she found something and been murdered to silence her?’
‘That was my initial reaction but I have checked her reports and they contain nothing of any
significance.’
