memo to himself but because they believed he was Arnold Warner they asked for post delivered to
Arnold Warner, they were not aware that Hagley did have an escape plan and had opened an

account in a different name. When they learnt there was no account in that name, torture turned
to spite and he died of a heart attack.’

‘ But look, the CIA does not go around wantonly killing their own.’ George almost spilt his drink in
            his indignation.

‘George, he wasn’t their own, he was ours. Just as Frank Furlong was ours but he was killed because
he told me the truth about Anne’s murder. The fact is the CIA has a psychopathic special operations

            unit on the loose.’

‘And you believe they killed your wife?’

            ‘I am certain of it.’

‘So, Warner is now living in New York as Hagley?’

‘Yes, he is living in Hagley’s apartment in Manhattan. He knows that to maintain his new identity
he will have to accept whatever work MI6 throw at him, for the time being at least.’

‘So you left him in situ? But what if he just disappears again?’

‘He can’t. When Arnold was first contacted by the Russians, they gave him a photograph of his
mother in a cellophane envelope with a press stud closure. Arnold still carries it with him. The press
stud is a tracking device. Some people in New York are now monitoring him for me. They will track
            his every movement.’

            ‘Viktor Balandin!’

            ‘You knew?’

Yes. He telephoned me, did you use the gun?’

‘No. There was no need in the end. Warner told me everything. But why would Viktor call you.’

‘He was worried about you .You were there unofficially and you paid for a large gun and with those
bullets, whatever you intended to shoot you clearly meant to kill and not just wound.

He did not want you to end up in a New York jail. You saved his and his son’s life when you got
them out and he wanted to save yours in return.’

George finished his scotch. ‘Oh what the hell, it must be six o’clock somewhere.’ He topped up both
            beakers.

‘So that is Warners past, what about the present, is he a reformed mole or is he lying?’

‘He is lying through his teeth!’
