THE COTTAGE
TH
FRIDAY APRIL 24 1998
‘Be warned, he’s after blood! “Are you sure you told him I wanted him here first thing?” he keeps
asking. Bye the way, he knows you have been to New York.’
‘Does he now! OK Bren. Can you ring Oakley for me? One of the directors, I can’t think of his name
but it will be in my contact list, used to be Anne’s supervisor. I need to speak with him before I see
George. And use the safe phone’
I sat at my desk to gather my thoughts before I went upstairs.
‘Bob Cransom for you.’ Bren called out and patched him through.
‘Bob, good morning. It’s Bryant, Anne’s husband. You used to be her supervisor.’
‘Yes of course. I heard what happened and please accept my condolences. It must have been
traumatic for you, what a dreadful accident.’
‘Thank you. Yes it was, still is traumatic frankly. That’s why I am calling you. I am trying to piece
together what happened just before her death. She received a series of intercepts from you and
what I cannot understand is why these calls were intercepted at all, there is no keyword to initiate
the intercepts as far as I can tell. I would very much like to see you and perhaps speak to the
interceptor.’
‘I am sorry Bryant but that would be to no avail. Anne came up to see me; I believe she had the
same feeling as you. The fact is the intercepts were fakes, they had the correct identification for the
dates, contained the correct password to step through a security firewall and even had the
embedded security code but what they did not have was the correct protocol for transmission
from within GCHQ. I cannot say for certain say that the information on the intercepts is false, we
would have to search through thousands of intercepts, it really would be like looking for a needle
in a haystack. Do you know if the intelligence was correct?’
‘Absolutely, that is what is confusing.’
‘In which case they may have been proper intercepts originally but might have been doctored. That
could be the reason there was no transmission. That would be impossible to recreate on any kind of
copy. No one would have checked whether they came from us, they would just assume they did. No
one, that is, except your wife.’
I slowly replaced the receiver. Was this the reason Anne had been murdered? Murdered because
she discovered the intercepts were fakes? And yet it appears the substance of the intercepts was
real, factual.
I was about to make my way up to George’s office when Bren called me back.
