‘Yeh! That was it. Piccadilly line straight into Heathrow.
The next morning I returned to New York. Getting back in America would have been difficult on a

Russian Passport so I used the Caldicot passport which after twenty five years should be safe, which
            it was.’

            I turned the recorder off.

If Warner had got out of the taxi at Park Royal then Anne would have been less than ten minutes
from home. What made her turn the taxi back to Vauxhall Cross to pick up her car? It was the
decision that had cost her life.

I lay back on my pillow and started to think about Anne. I smiled to myself as I recalled our first
Christmas together. We had spent nearly all day in bed waiting for the oven bell to ring only to
discover Anne had put the turkey in the bottom oven but had turned on the top oven by mistake.

Our marriage had not been idyllic, the need for secrecy always came between us, but we did love
each other. For some time before her death, she had changed. Sometimes it seemed she was
keeping more secrets than I was and sometimes I thought she seemed scared. Now I knew she was
working for Barker it became more obvious why she was the way she was.

Another quandary was the intercepts. Normally intercepts are triggered by key words but none
ever showed up in the intercepts she had been given. The conversation was extremely low key. So
what triggered them. I needed to get in touch with GCHQ and speak to the interceptor.

I started to doze and dream about Anne but every time I saw her face in my dream, she became
            Gabriela!
