The Technion’s Faculty of
Mechanical Engineering is
composed of thousands of
individuals, who, together,
make up dozens of units,
sub-units, and groups.
In each issue, the “Elite
Squad” section focuses on
a different, unique group.
This time, we talk to a group
of students from the Brakim
(Hebrew for “lightning”)
excellence program.
Like other students in
the Atuda (academic
reserve program), Brakim
participants will complete
their undergraduate degrees
before enlisting, and apply
their education during their
military service in the IDF.
This elite crew’s program is
especially ambitious and
accelerated: To complete
their BSc degrees, as well as
their MSc coursework and
thesis, in four years. The
Brakim program trains its
participants as mechanical
engineers at the Technion,
enabling them to take part
in the faculty’s research
groups. Graduates serve
in the IDF’s special units
researching and developing
new weapon systems,
intelligence systems, and
other advanced military
technologies. The students
are from different parts
of the country, and the
proportion of women among
them is 30%.
