Nurses are not superheroes. While nurses and
superheroes share the following five qualities,
the two are not the same.
First. A nurse’s courage to battle his or her
own fears and bravely leap into action when
another’s life is at risk is greater than the
courage any superhero could muster. The
nurse is aware that they are human, and as
such are fallible. Yet, they triumph over the
fear of failure and face the daunting odds in
front of them in order to save the life of
another.
Second. A nurse puts their patients first.
Even forgoing their own personal needs to
attend to those who are at their weakest
moment. Caring for individuals who may not
be able to care for themselves, expecting
nothing in return. This selfless behavior is a
gift and a curse, as the effort and emotion
spilled into the patient’s life can at times scar
the nurses own spirit when things do not turn
out for the best.
Third. The humility often found in the core of
nurses is commonly overlooked when a
patient makes a miraculous recover. Spending
every moment, focused on his or her patient.
Working to abate any potential crisis as soon as
the smallest indication allows. Providing the little
life saving measures that go unnoticed. Grateful
for their anonymity, as it allows them to continue
their passion unhindered.
Fourth. The patience of a nurse is often
unrecognized in the chaos that surrounds them.
The ability to exercise this calm patience when
quick thinking and decisive action seem to cloud
the minds of others, is a skill that can mean the
difference between life and death.
Fifth. Separate from selflessness, nurses have a
sense of concern and kindness for others that is
unparalleled. Often manifesting itself in the strong
but gentle actions meant to improve the lives
others. Knowing that these actions will rarely
attract any notice, but continuing to exercise them
simply because it is the right thing to do.
Nurses do not derive these special powers from a
random DNA mutation, a bite from a radioactive
insect, or even the power of a yellow sun. The
powers that nurses wield are the result of hard
work, dedication, resilience, and bladder control.
Nurses are not superheroes; they are much more.
