Professor Russo is the chairperson of
Vision Care Technology and the
Anatomy and Physiology, Contact
Lens and Business course
coordinator. He is certified by the
ABO, the NCLE, the OAA in
Refractometry and is licensed in New
York and New Jersey. Professor
Russo is currently the President of
the NFOS. He is a past
Commissioner for the Commission on
Opticianry Accreditation, a past
member of the board of directors of
the Contact Lens Society of New
York State and past chapter
president of New York State Society
of Opticians. In addition, Professor
Russo has served on the faculty for
the OAA, Vision Expo, EyeQuest and
the ABO/NCLE Education
Conferences. He has published
several articles on contact lenses and
speaks frequently at the national and
state level. Professor Russo received
an Associate Degree in Ophthalmic
Dispensing from New York City
Community College, a Bachelor of
Science degree in Business
Management from The City
University of New York, and a Master
of Arts Degree in Education from
New York University. Professor
Russo was named National
Federation of Opticianry Schools
“Educator of the Year” in 2009,
“Optician of the Year” by the New
York State Society of Opticians in
2012 and received the National
Academy of Opticianry’s Joseph
Bruneni Memorial Education
Achievement Award in 2015.
This course is designed to teach the registrant a basic
understanding of subjective testing techniques. The emphasis
will be placed on verifying possible prescription changes in either
eyeglasses or contact lenses. The theory of over-refraction
terminology will be covered and case studies will be utilized to
demonstrate the subjective refraction techniques.
What is Sagittal Value and How Does It Affect Fit of a
Contact Lens
This course is designed to teach the registrant about
understanding the desirable lens-corneal relationship of a
spherical rigid lens design. Apical vault will be defined separating
the central lens-corneal relationship as a function of the CPC,
POZ and "K" readings from the lens-corneal relationship as a
function of total diameter.
Comparison of Spectacles v. Contact Lenses
The advantages and disadvantages an eyeglass wearer may
experience when switching from spectacles to contact lenses will
be analyzed. Included in this lecture will be changes in
magnification, field of view, accommodation and convergence
requirements, peripheral aberrations, anisekonia and visual
acuity.
Contact Lens Solutions
This course will cover solutions and disinfection systems for
hard, soft and gas permeable lenses. Emphasis will be placed
on preservatives and other components of contact lens solutions
that may cause an adverse ocular response when incompatible
solutions are used. In addition, this course will deal with FDA
lens groups and how lens deposits affect each group.
Selecting the Proper Lens for the Prospective Patient
This course will deal with the proper lens modality to a given
patient. The lecture will deal with the prescription analysis
comparing the spectacle cylinder with the corneal cylinder.
Astigmatism will be defined and compared to the incidence of
residual astigmatism in fitting contact lenses. The method of
teaching will include case studies in which the registrant will
establish a starting point in choosing the proper type of lens to fit
the patient.
