Nautical Term
for the Day....
"Beating a Dead Horse"
The term might be derived from
the "dead horse" ritual, a prac-
tice in which seamen would pa-
rade a straw-stuffed dummy of
a horse around the deck before
throwing it overboard.
Seamen were often paid partly
in advance before a long voyage,
and most of the money was spent
at taverns and brothels before
getting on the ship. So for the 1st month, they weren't get-
ting paid except for food so it was like having a useless dead
horse (both referring to owning one and to the crew acting like
one). So, at the end of this month, there would be a ceremony
to celebrate having worked off the "dead horse" debt.
