4.2.1 Electrical Meter Cupboard
Under an amendment to the 17th Ed IEE
Regulations from the end of 2011, a proper
cupboard is required around all electrical
switchgear and metering installations.
Not only must distribution boards, meters and
other such items be enclosed in a proper
cupboard, but the clearances in front are
specified and the need for enough room to
work to replace any faulty items is also specified.
This means that the off-the-shelf access doors
enclosure to be fire D R
that some contractors like to use are barely big
enough and if used they MUST be positioned to
give the regulation access.
The ideal is a decent hinged door although it
door. Please note also, that if a cupboard
needs to be built, then it must be sized to not
only contain the electrical equipment but must
still allow clear passage for anyone who needs
to get past in the corridor.
The following sketch illustrates, in general terms,
what is required.
