The Midrash tells us that as the Egyp ans were mee ng their horrible end in the churning
waters of the Red Sea the angels wished to sing out praise to Hashem. Hashem rebuked them
and said “My crea ons are drowning in the sea and you wish to sing praises?!’’ The custom of
spilling the wine, explained the Abarbanel, is because wine is a sign of rejoicing. However one
should not rejoice when an enemy falls, because they too are crea ons of Hashem.

“Blood, and fire and pillars of smoke…”
Another interpretation of Devarim 26:8 is: “strong hand” indicates two plagues; “outstretched
arm” indicates two more plagues; “great awe” indicates two plagues; “signs” indicates two more
plagues because it is plural; and “wonders” two more plagues because it is in the plural. This
then is a total of Ten Plagues.
