the adversary's objection is introduced by the words ' On pourra
dire ' ( one might say, corresponding to the ~ ~;:ffl and
~~q{ ~a- in Gau~apada's Bha~hya ) and to the refutation
are prefixed the words ' Respondent a to us no us disons ' ( Replying
to all this we say. corresponding to am :ah:.Qfl'i{("ff arrg: of
Gau~apada ). It seems clear, therefore, that the commen-
tary which was rendered into Chinese by Paramartha in the earlyl
part of the sixth century A. D. was in substantial agreemen
with the Bhd~hya of Gau~apada.
I have stated above that the manuscript of Ma~haravritti in
the Deccan College Library agrees more with the Chinese commen
tary than does the Bhci.~hya of Gau~apada. The Mss. of this
vritti are very scarce. The Deccan College Ms. gives the commen-
tary on the 61st verse thus-
