        Engineering Meeting

Gary Fenton of Stoughton Trailers led TTMA’s Engineering Committee meeting on Thursday afternoon.

The committee was updated on the status of GHG2 Rulemaking. Initiatives are ongoing in both the U.S. and Canada. For
the U.S. rule, EPA’s status, or lack thereof, with being ready for trailer manufacturers to comply was of significant
concern. Other problems with compliance is the absence of low rolling resistance tires in smaller sizes, the requirement
that tire pressure monitoring systems have in-cab warning lights meaning that they can only be used with trailers that
are pulled by dedicated tractors. The Canadian rule mirrors the U.S. rule and even points to sections of the U.S. rule for
compliance, which members took to mean that the Canadian rule will stay in effect or go depending on what happens
        with the U.S. rule.

Also discussed were recent TMC activities, our petition to allow for OEM installed strobe lights, Conestoga conspicuity,
rear impact guards, and trailer mounted equipment.

The committee reviewed several TTMA publications and reissued:
             TB 108 – Spread/Steering Axle Specialty Trailers

They also reviewed and approved a new publication relating to GHG2:
             TB 129 – A User’s Guide to EPA Regulations for Trailers
Another proposed publication, a manufacturer’s guide to complying with EPA’s GHG2 regulation, is on hold as we learn
more of what is involved. Observations and corrections to the draft document are welcome.

Hosted Meetings: The committee expressed their gratitude to Associate members who have hosted meetings. Andy
Kinnucan of Hoosier Tank is host of this year’s Associate-hosted meeting, which the committee decided to hold on
October 18 & 19, 2017. Future meeting volunteers are as follows:

2017: Bill Schaffer of Overseas Hardwoods, Mobile, AL
2018: Steve Meagher of Peterson Mfg. Co., Grandview, MO
2019: Dave Lajeunesse of Phillips, Santa Fe Springs, CA
2020: Steve Miller of AXN Heavy Duty, Louisville, KY

The Engineering Committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday morning, August 3rd, 2017 at The Embassy Suites
Hotel in Alexandria, VA. We will be having a TREAD Act training session on Tuesday morning with the Product Liability
meeting following that afternoon. Wednesday will include the Joint Industry Government meeting followed by the Joint
Tank Industry/Government meeting and then the Tank Engineering meeting.
