ABSTRACT Technology communication is rapidly growing. Through years ago, there was a
improvement of real time communication using Internet Protocols (IP). Voice over Internet
Protocol as known as a VoIP is a technology that allows users to make a voice or video calls over
the Internet. It provide several advantages rather than traditional circuit switching networks such
as Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). There are several protocol supported over VoIP
which are Transport Control Protocol (TCP), User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Real Time Protocol
(RTP). This paper focuses on performance analysis of VoIP traffic over MANET. We are using an
exponential traffic source to re-create a typical voice conversation over VoIP. Destination
Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV) are used in this study as MANET routing protocol. The main
objective of this paper is to study the comparison of VoIP traffic over TCP and RTP protocol based
on different performance metrics which are throughput, jitter, average end-to-end delay and
packet delivery ratio and their results are shown in a graphical form. The performance evaluation
has been done by using simulation tool network simulator NS2. From our analysis, the average
throughput, jitter and end-to-end delay value of RTP is better than TCP while TCP perform better
in term of packet delivery ratio. It is important to make sure that the network in the best effort
condition to handle the VoIP traffic regardless traffic condition. Low delay and jitter are the higher
priority. As for result, we conclude that RTP is performed better than TCP for VoIP traffic over
MANET.
