Would a man%u2019s fast be broken if he kisses his wife and her saliva mixes with his?He must not swallow her saliva in order to maintain his fast. He should also avoid passionate kissing that would arouse him sexually to prevent the discharge of semen/mani which would invalidate his fast.Ibn Qudamah (ra) said, %u201cOr if he swallows the saliva of another, his fast is broken due to swallowing saliva that's not his, which would hold a similar ruling as not his, which would hold a similar ruling as swallowing anything else.%u201dWhat is the expiation for spouses who have intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan due to desire that stemmed from both of them?They must repent, seek forgiveness from Allah, and be regretful.They must also make up this day.They must offer an expiation. Expiation would be:Freeing a believing slave, and if not feasible,Then one should fast two consecutive months, and if not able to do so,Then one should feed 60 poor Muslim people.Narrated Abu Huraira (ra): While we were sitting with the Prophet (pbuh) a man came and said, %u201cOh, Allah%u2019s Messenger! I have been ruined.%u201d Allah%u2019s Messenger (pbuh) asked what was the matter with him. He replied, %u201cI had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting.%u201d Allah%u2019s Messenger (pbuh) asked him, %u201cCan you afford to free a slave?%u201d He replied in the negative. Allah's Messenger (pbuh) asked him, %u201cCan you fast for two consecutive months?%u201d He replied in the negative. The Prophet pbuh asked him, %u201cCan you afford to feed sixty poor persons?%u201d He replied in the negative. The Prophet pbuh kept silent and while he was in that state, a big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet pbuh. He asked, %u201cWhere is the questioner?%u201d He replied, %u201cI (am here).%u201d The Prophet pbuh said (to him), %u201cTake this (basket of dates) and give it in charity.%u201d The man said, %u201cShould I give it to a person poorer than I.%u201d The Prophet pbuh smiled till his premolar teeth became visible and then said, %u201cFeed your family with it.%u201d [Bukhari and Muslim]Copyright %u00a9 2023 Islamic Association of Raleigh.
