Not fasting in this case is an act of worship because Allah does not want us to harm ourselves.Does a person who does not fast due to a chronic illness need to pay a kaffara?No, kaffara is paid to rectify a sin. Since no sin was committed, they would need to pay a fidya, which means %u2018in replacement of%u2019 in the amount of $7 to feed one Muslim poor person per day.Does the fidya need to be paid day by day or as a lump sum? and when?It can be paid on a daily basis.It can be given to the same person every night.It can be paid as a lump sum amount in the beginning, middle, or towards the end of the month. It is more preferable to pay it at the beginning of the month so that the poor can benefit from it as soon as possible.It can also be paid to a group of 30 people on the same night and it can also be for different people on different nights. The goal is to feed 30 poor muslims by the end of the month.Does an elder automatically fall under the sick category?No, they do not.When is an elder exempt from fasting?An elder who is not sick, but has difficulty fasting due to advanced old age (which in our society would be considered 80 or above) can refrain from fasting.
