What if the student travels back and forth during that time period from Raleigh to his home country?Whether or not the student is still considered a resident of his home country is flexible. He is considered a resident of both places, so the only days he can break his fast are the actual travel days.In summary, the opinion that this class adopts for the breaking of the fast of the traveler is that the traveler starts the day of travel with the intention and the act of fasting, is allowed to break the fast once out of the vicinity of his home area, and is allowed to continue breaking the fast for the duration of the trip, whether or not he knows ahead of time what that duration is. In the case of the prolonged student traveler, however, he is considered a resident of both the study area and his home country and can only break his fast on the days of travel. How would a traveler make up the missed fasting days of Ramadan?Majority of the scholars agree that the days need to be made up before the next Ramadan. The evidence is the action of A%u2019isha (ra) who made sure she did it before the next Ramadan. Abu Salamah narrated that A%u2019isha (ra), said, %u201cI had to make up some fasts I missed during the month of Ramadan, but I was unable to do so until the month of Sha%u2019ban as I was busy with the Prophet (pbuh).%u201d [Bukhari and Muslim]The concept of performing a missed act of worship before starting a new act applies to all forms of worship. For example, if a person misses duhr prayer and then the time of asr comes in, he needs to pray duhr first and then asr. What if a traveler had a legitimate reason for not being able to make up missed fasts before the next Ramadan?Majority of the scholars agree that there is no sin on him and no kaffara, but he still needs to make up the days. A kaffara is an expiation to rectify a worship act, which consists of feeding a poor Muslim person per missed day.Copyright %u00a9 2023 Islamic Association of Raleigh.
