What if the above case was for non-Ramadan fasts, such as fasting on Mondays and Thursdays and the six days of the month of Shawwal?The majority of the scholars agree that if there is difficulty in fasting and they didn't break the fast, then that is disliked (makrooh).Traveling Scenario:The traveler starts on a business trip from Raleigh, NC to Atlanta, Georgia the next day at 4pm.When is he allowed to start breaking his fast?According to the majority of the scholars, he has to have the intention of fasting that day and start fasting the same as everyone else. Once he gets on the plane and has left the Triangle area, he is now considered to be a traveler and is allowed to break his fast.Once the man gets to his destination at the hotel in Georgia, is he allowed to continue breaking the fast?The majority of the scholars say that if he is intending to stay 4 days or less on his trip, then yes, he is. He is considered a traveler for that entire time period and he can continue taking the concessions of a traveler.What if he knows ahead of time that the trip will last more than 4 days?The majority of the scholars say that if he is intending to stay more than 4 days, then no, he cannot continue breaking his fast. He is no longer a traveler in this case; he is a resident. However, he can still take the concession of a traveler on his first day of travel, but starting the next day he has to start fasting. On the day he travels back to Raleigh, he is also allowed to break his fast once he leaves the area he is in; but he has to have started the day fasting.Copyright %u00a9 2023 Islamic Association of Raleigh.
