What if he does not know ahead of time how long the trip will last? Can he break his fast the entire length of time? The majority of the scholars say yes, he can take all the concessions of a traveler. Is the majority opinion strong enough to adopt pertaining to length of time allowable as a concession to a traveler? No, we do not adopt the majority opinion in this case because there is no evidence in the sunnah that there is a specified time limit. The scholars adopted the 4 day limit based on a trip our Prophet pbuh took from Medina to Mecca in which he knew beforehand would last 4 days. They state that other longer trips that our Prophet (pbuh) took, in which he broke his fast for the entire duration of the trip, was due to him not knowing beforehand how long he would be staying away from home. However, there is nothing in the sunnah to indicate that such a distinction exists. The traveler arrives back home in Raleigh at 10am. Can he continue not fasting?According to the Hanafi and Hanbali schools, he must stop eating at that point, but the day doesn't count as a fasting day and he needs to make up for that day.According to the Maaliki and Shafi%u2019i schools, it is recommended for him to stop eating the rest of the day out of respect for the month and to not have people see him eating and wonder why he is not fasting. He still needs to make up that day.If a person travels to another area with the intention of staying a very prolonged time, such as a student of knowledge traveling to Raleigh from overseas and planning on staying several years, would he be allowed to take the concession of a traveler? In this case, the student can only break his fast on the day of travel because he will be considered a resident of the area for the years he spends in it.Copyright %u00a9 2023 Islamic Association of Raleigh.
