What is the evidence that travel is a legitimate reason that allows a person to break his/her fast during Ramadan or an obligatory fast?The evidence is: %u201c...so whoever sights (the new moon of) the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days...%u201d [al-Baqara, 2:185]The evidence for the rulings on the fasting of the traveler is from the following hadith, narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah:\ Prophet (pbuh) went to Makkah in the Year of the Conquest, so he fasted until he reached Kura Al-Ghamim and the people were fasting with him. Then it was said to him: 'The fast has become difficult for the people, and they are watching you to see what you will do.' So after Asr, he called for a cup of water and drank it while the people were looking at him. Some of them broke the fast while some of them continued their fasting. It was conveyed to him that people were still fasting, so he said: \What is the definition of travel?It is defined by culture and custom. For example, we wouldn't consider travel within our city limits or to another neighboring city or town, as travel.The majority of scholars agree that the travel needs to have been initiated before the fajr of the new day of fasting and continued on into the fasting hours.Can a fast be broken by a traveling person who started traveling after fajr and during fasting hours?Majority of the scholars say no, except if there is hardship involved. They agreed though that if the traveler does break it during the day, the traveler needs to only make up that day without a need to pay kaffara (expiation).
