If a couple who had sexual intercourse during the day in Ramadan are in the process of fasting the penalty of 60 consecutive days, are they ever allowed to have an interruption of the fast during that time period?Yes. Any legitimate reason that a person has to break the fast during the days of Ramadan would apply. For example, if the wife starts her monthly cycle, she would stop fasting for that time period and then would continue where she left off with the fast of the 60 consecutive days. Likewise, if the husband or the wife got sick, they would be able to stop fasting until they recovered and then continue where they left off with the fast. What is the ruling for a person who was in the process of fasting the 60 consecutive days and dies before completing the time period? The same ruling would apply as for anyone else who died while owing missed fasts. The heirs would make up the days, and if they could not, they would pay the fidya for the days that the deceased person did not complete. What is the ruling for a person who engages in sexual intercourse during the day of Ramadan while totally ignorant of the prohibition of this act while fasting? It would be the same as the ruling for forgetfulness. The person needs to repent and the day would still count as a day of fasting for the person. What is the ruling for a person who engages in sexual intercourse during the day of Ramadan while aware that it is prohibited, but unaware as to the severity of the consequences?Based on the hadith below, the person still has to fast the 60 consecutive days because the companion who went to the Prophet (pbuh) and told him about what he had done, did so knowing that he was wrong but without being aware of the penalty. Yet, the companion was still instructed to do the penalty:Copyright %u00a9 2023 Islamic Association of Raleigh. All rights reserved. 42
