What is a fifth invalidator of the fast and what is the evidence for it?Masturbation is haram whether in Ramadan or otherwise. It invalidates the fast and requires a tawbaand a make up of the day. The evidence for it is in the words of Allah in the following hadith qudsi:%u201cHe gives up his food and drink and desire for My sake.%u201d [Bukhari and Muslim]Causing ejaculation comes under the heading of the desire which the fasting person gives up. If a person starts to masturbate then stops without ejaculating, he has to repent, but his fast is still valid, and he does not have to make it up later because he did not ejaculate. With regard to the emission of madhiy (light cloudy prostatic fluid), the most correct view is that it does not invalidate the fast. What is a sixth invalidator of the fast and what is the evidence for it?According to the Hanbali school, letting blood out by means of cupping and the like, invalidates the fast. The evidence is in the following hadith:The Prophet (pbuh) said: %u201cThe cupper and the one to whom cupping is done both break their fast.%u201d [ Abu Dawood]However, according to the majority of scholars, cupping does not invalidate the fast because it was reported that the Prophet (pbuh) did it while he was fasting so they combined both incidents by saying it is only disliked during fasting. What about blood tests and blood donations? If the blood that is withdrawn is regarded as being a small amount for a blood test, then this procedure does not invalidate the fast.If a person donates blood and a large amount is taken, this invalidates their fast, by analogy with cupping, which refers to the act of letting blood flow from the veins.Copyright %u00a9 2023 Islamic Association of Raleigh.
