What about the timing of the start and end of the cycle? When a woman sees the blood of her period or nifaas (post-birth bleeding), her fast becomes invalid even if it is one moment before sunset. If a woman feels that her period has started but no blood comes out until after sunset, her fast is still valid. If the bleeding of a woman who is menstruating or in nifaas ceases at night and she has the intention of fasting, then dawn comes before she does ghusl, the view of all the scholars is that her fast is valid. If a woman has spotting which she knows is a regular part of her cycle, then that spotting invalidates the fast. However, if the spotting is irregular and she knows that it's not part of her cycle, then her fast is still valid. Is it permissible for a woman to take pills to prevent her menstrual cycle from appearing during Ramadan? It is preferable for a woman to keep to her natural cycle and to accept that which Allah has decreed for her, and not to take any medicine to prevent her period. However, If a woman takes pills and her period stops as a result, that is fine, she can fast and her fast is acceptable. What are the conditions that need to be met in order for a fast to be invalid? All of the above matters are things that invalidate the fast. All of them %u2013 apart from menses and nifaas %u2013 only invalidate the fast if three conditions are met: 1. That the person was aware of the ruling and not ignorant of it. 2. That he did it knowingly and not out of forgetfulness.3. That he did it by choice and was not forced to do it.Copyright %u00a9 2023 Islamic Association of Raleigh. All rights reserved. 74
