Which is the most serious invalidator of a fast and requires an expiation?Intercourse is the most serious invalidator, as it has a severe expiation along with it. The person needs to make tawba, make up the day, and fast for 60 consecutive days. The evidence is in the following hadith:Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (ra) who said: A man came to the Prophet (pbuh) and said, %u201cI am doomed, O Messenger of Allah!%u201d He said, %u201cWhy are you doomed?%u201d He said, %u201cI had intercourse with my wife (during the day) in Ramadan.%u201d He said, %u201cCan you free a slave?%u201d He said, %u201cNo.%u201d He said, %u201cCan you fast for two consecutive months?%u201d He said, %u201cNo.%u201d He said, %u201cCan you feed sixty poor persons?%u201d He said, %u201cNo.%u201d%u2026 Narrated by [Bukhari and Muslim]Is discharge during intercourse a requirement for a fast to be invalidated? No; any act of intercourse, even without discharge, invalidates the fast.Is there an expiation required for any other invalidator of a fast?No expiation, other than a tawba and a make up of the day, is required for any of the other things that break the fast apart from intercourse. What is a second invalidator of the fast and what is the evidence for it? Eating invalidates the fast and the evidence is in the following verse: %u201cSo now have sexual relations with them and seek that which Allah has ordained for you (offspring), and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night), then complete your sawm (fast) till the nightfall%u201d [Al-Baqara, 2:187]Copyright %u00a9 2023 Islamic Association of Raleigh.
