After it was discovered in 1932, the temple was studied from 1942 to
                                                 1943. Restorations of temple’s padma or lotus-shaped frame superstructure
                                                 (sisi genta) and the stupika (dagoba) on top of the roof have been conducted
                                                 twice (from 1943 to 1962 and 1976 to 1978).

                                                      Who built the temple is not clear, since there is no mention on any
                                                 inscribed stones. However, the construction time of Candi Banyunibo has
                                                 been estimated circa 9th century during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty
                                                 by comparison of several temple superstructures and roofs which resulted
                                                 in similarities with temples in Central Java, namely Candi Semar, Dieng
                                                   Temple Complex, an ancillary temple of Candi Gedongsongo 3, and
                                                        Candi Plaosan Lor.

                                                                     Candi Banyunibo is a Buddhist temple, based on the
                                                                 existing stupika atop the roof, bas-reliefs of Boddhisattvas
                                                                and six ancillary temples in the form of stupas around the
                                                               main temple of Banyunibo. In addition, bas-relief on temple
