A loop knot is a closed bight tied either in the

end or in the central part of a rope. While it

serves much the same purpose as a hitch, a loop

is made to drop over an object, while a hitch is

tied directly around an object and follows its

shape. Consequently, hitches will undo or

'capsize' when removed from the object they are

fastened to, while a loop can be used over and

over again. Some loops are fixed into place, other

loops are designed to slip and change size. These

are called running knots, and have nooses that

tighten around objects when tied and slacken

when the strain is reduced .
