Nomination Recognition 2017
Report by Individual Nominee
CATEGORY: LIFELONG LEARNER
NOMINEE NOMINATOR DEPARTMENT
Jessica Tittl Sarah Wilson New Technology and Alliances 700360
Describe the situation or event related to the individual's or team's performance.
I nominated Jessica for lifelong learner as she absolutely is representative of this category in all aspects of her
life. Jessica is committed to learning and growing. Outside of work she leads a non-profit committed to
educating the public about climate change. She recently decided to take her professional career to the next
level by applying to a PhD program. At work she is committed to her new role in new technology with particular
attention to the evolving world of microbiome research. I have personally witnessed her learn and grow in the
past year.
She demonstrated a number of competencies related to improving her technical skills and knowledge this year.
While I was out of the office due to medical leave she worked closely with me and became my "boots on the
ground" for GOJO's first clinical nasal study. This was Jessica's first clinical microbiology study where she took
a lead role. She learned the ins and outs of clinical regulations (IRB, informed consent, recruitment, etc.),
learned how to plate micro samples in the lab, and got a taste of the challenges of partnering with external
research partners.
Midway through the study we experienced a challenge when our collaborator at Kent State could no longer
work on our study. Jessica quickly took charge and was able to get a student up to speed to help her with
execution. Jessica spent long hours trying to chase down study participants for samples, even driving to
Cleveland for samples when needed. I think this clearly demonstrates Jessica's aptitude for GOJO's ways of
working.
This work was important to the enterprise as it was our first foray into the world of nasal sanitizer research and
we developed a number of competencies. While the final study did not turn out as we had hoped due to
difficulty retaining participants we still learned a lot and this study has set us on a path to developing GOJO's
first nasal sanitizer product.
Describe in detail the individual's or team's notable behaviors.
Not everyone would relish the opportunity to learn the way Jessica did in this project. This was my project and
she got "stuck" with it when I went out on medical leave. Many people would feel like this was a burden,
particularly when the project was outside their typical skill set. However, Jessica was different, I really think she
relished the opportunity to learn about clinical research and microbiology studies. She viewed this project as an
opportunity to learn and grow her skills.
What were the results of the individual’s or team’s behaviors?
Completion of a very difficult study that without her would not have happened. She drove to completion GOJO's
first nasal study which was a project that was assigned to me at the beginning of the year that I could not
complete due to medical leave.
