The End Times—A Timetable 145

The prophet Daniel regretfully foresaw all of this: "He
shall confirm the covenant with many for one week [seven
years]: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the
sacrifice and the oblation to cease. . . even until the con-
                           summation [Armageddon]" (Dan. 9:27).
The Lord corroborated this, as we have seen, and added
some good advice about those terrible times.
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desola-
tion, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy
place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) then let them
which be in Judea flee into the mountains: let him which
is on the housetop not come down to take anything out
of his house: neither let him which is in the field return
to take his clothes. . . . For then shall be great tribulation,
such as was not [seen! since the beginning of the world to
this time, no, nor ever shall be (Mt 24:15-21).

                           ARMAGEDDON
No use going into a lot of detail about this event. In the
old days, when people fought with the blade and the torch,
commentators must have had a hard time getting them to
realize the full horror of Armageddon. Scriptures about
"fire down from heaven" were regarded as referring to de-
vine retributions—not napalm bombs and nuclear fission.
That the whole earth might be involved in a single war
would have amazed even the generations who saw our
                            previous world wars.
But in the holocaust that's coming, we are apparently
going to use the sum total of man's vast, deadly war-making
knowledge. Jesus Christ will finally hasten to the scene be-
cause, "except those days should be shortened, there should
no flesh be saved" (Mt 24:22).
For our purposes in looking at the story of the Tribula-
