after commencing work as a Registered Nurse, he enrolled for Psychiatric
Honoris Causa Nursing Training at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Town, South
Africa.
3. MR. NDJEMBO’S WORK CAREER
Mr. Ndjembo was appointed as a Senior Registered Nurse at the Oshakati
State Hospital in 1980. From July 1980, he was delegated to the medical
ward, in which Psychiatric patients were also accommodated, before
the Psychiatric ward was built. At the beginning of 1984, Mr Ndjembo was
moved to the Oshakati Hospital Nurses’ Training College as an Assistant
Tutor in Medical Nursing, Psychology and Sociology.
In October 1986, Mr Ndjembo’s career changed when he joined the
South West Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SWABC) as a Junior Radio
Programme producer and thereafter a newsreader. In 1987, he was
promoted to a Senior Radio Programmer, a position he held until 1988,
when he was promoted to an Executive Radio Programmer position,
which saw him supervising news translations, casting, drama script writing,
producing and directing in Oshiwambo radio service. Mr. Ndjembo held
the latter position until the 31 of March 2003, when he resigned to pursue

a career in writing.
4. A CAREER AS AN AUTHOR
Mr. Ndjembo, in his formative years primarily learnt through informal
education. Although he lived with his parents, as a young man, he was
fortunate to meet his paternal grandmother who came to live with his
parents. During the ohungi (evening storytelling session) his grandmother
narrated many historical events to him, which had occurred in their
community. She taught him oral literature and history, culture and
customs. His grandmother shared history of skirmishes and conflicts which
