5. !Gontes, K., A systematic review on best practices of Teaching
Practicum: Re-defining the role of school pre-service teacher
mentorship
Background: Teaching practicum (TP), also called School-Based
Studies (SBS), is a pedagogical practice in the pre-service teacher
education programme that exposes pre-service teachers to the actual
school setting and real classroom. At the University of Namibia, TP is
divided into different phases depending on the year of study of a
cohort and areas of specialization. During the TP, students are given
several lessons to teach, and the assigned mentors evaluate some
lessons taught by students during the TP period. Evaluations are
conducted through live classroom observations.
Aim: The purpose is to explore best practices TP models that could be
adapted to improve the TP in Namibia.
Methodology: This study has adopted a systematic review as a
method of compressively reviewing literature.
Results: The results show that other countries have developed robust
SBS system according to their needs.
Recommendations: The study recommends a mentorship course with
a blended approach, including face-face and online classes.
