4. Burger, R. & Strauss, A.M., Teachers’ perceptions of extra-mural
programs at Oranjemund Private School
Background: After-school programmes are programmes that offer
more than one activity and occur after-school hours. For example, an
after-school programmes may be composed of intervention
components that offer academic support or enrichment, recreational or
skill development activities.
Aim: The purpose of this study is to solicit teachers’ perceptions of
extra-mural programs at Oranjemund Private School.
Methodology: A qualitative research method was chosen for this
study. The data collection method chosen for this study is a
questionnaire. Twelve teachers working full-time at Oranjemund
Private School was interviewed during this study. These teachers
teach from Grades 0 to Grade 7.
Results: The participants indicated many benefits of sport. These
included “sport is good exercise, helps you grow into a decent human
being, helps with children’s physical and emotional growth.” In terms
of time available for extra-mural activities, the participants indicated
that they do not have time for extra-mural activities. It was suggested
that more qualified coaches should be appointed to teach these extra-
mural activities.
Implication: The appointment of qualified coaches may advance
sports at this school. However, it will result into more teachers be
appointed, which in turn may have an implication on the school’s
budget.
Recommendations: Teachers must be trained in different sport codes
and extra-mural activities to revive afterschool activities for children.
Failure to participate in afternoon activities may have negative
consequences for learners. Sports promote a healthy lifestyle.
Conclusion: Overall, there are many benefits to participating in extra-
mural activities that can have a positive impact on learners’ lives.
