written work entails looking critically in learners’ Mathematics
exercise books to see what is written, how it is written, how often a
topic is discussed and how well the work is written. Analyzing
learners’ work is imperative for laying a solid mathematics foundation
for learning advanced mathematics.
Aim: This study was to investigate the quality of learners’ work, their
performance in different mathematics topics and explore the extent to
which teaching is aligned with the mathematics syllabus and scheme
of work.
Methodology: A qualitative research design was used to analyze
learners’ exercise books, mathematics syllabus and teachers’ scheme
of work.
Results: Findings of the study indicate that adequate work was
covered. It was also discovered that learners can improve in a specific
topic as teachers provide more than two different tasks based on the
same topic. Issues pertaining to writing and clarification of
instructions for learners and was expected of them were highlighted.
Conclusion: To bridge the gap between language and mathematics,
research is recommended to explore the extent to which teaching is
aligned with the mathematics syllabus and scheme of work.
