he paced the parking lot back and forth, often glancing
at the direction the bus would come. “Why is it taking so
long?”

Ama sat on the bench and glanced every time a bus
arrived. She told Ugyen to ask at the counter. “I worried.
Faster,” she said.

Just as he was about to go there, a bus arrived. He rushed
towards it even before it stopped. Much to his dismay, he
didn’t find Samphel on the bus. He returned to Ama. “He
isn’t on that bus. I think we should wait a little more. It
would arrive at any minute.”

Ama sighed. “Why is the bus not coming?”

“I will ask at the counter.”

“Please ask,” she said.

Ugyen peeked through in the opening at counter 1.
“Excuse me, when would the bus from Trashigang
arrive?”

“Ask at counter number 9,” said a girl, pointing further
left.

“Thank you,” he said and hurried to counter number
9. He read the schedule board hung above the counter:
KHORLO TRANSPORT: THIMPHU to
TRASHIGANG.
