PEDIATRIC SAFETY PRACTICES RENDERED BY HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS
MARK JAMES KENNETH Q. SISON
This study determined the safety practices of nurses in rendering care to pediatric
patients. Part 1 dealt on the personal profile of the respondents which include their age, sex,
civil status, highest educational attainment, length of service and number of years assigned in
pedia ward. Part II focused on the safety practices rendered by the nurses along fall prevention,
injury prevention, medicine administration and relief of pain. Part III dealt on the problems
encountered by the nurses in the care of pediatric patients.
Descriptive research design was used in the study utilizing the statistical tools frequency
and percentage, and weighted mean were used.
Majority of the respondents are 21-25 years of age with a frequency of 26 or 65%,
females staff nurses with a frequency of 25 or 62.5%, bachelor’s degree holder with a frequency
of 33 or 82.5%, and in the service for 1-3 years with a frequency of 31 or 77.5%.
On the safety practices of the nurses rendered, it was found out to be practiced.
However, in relation to the problems encountered by the nurses, it was found out to be serious.
A proposed program will be prepared to improve the safety practices of nurses to paediatrics
The respondents are young and in the service for few years and did not undergo higher
level of learning. The nurses perform the different safety practices in the four areas like medicine
administration, fall prevention, injury prevention and relief of pain.
There are problems encountered by the nurses in the care of pediatrics that must be
given attention to. The proposed program will be recommended for adaption in the pediatric
ward
The nurses must pursue higher level of learning to be abreast with the trends in the care
of paediatrics. Nurses must undergo trainings and updates on paediatrics. More understanding
must be given to pediatric patients however the mothers should be involved in the care while in
the hospital. The proposed program will be for implementation in the hospital
Future researches can be replicated using other variables of the study in a wider
perspective.
