COACHING COMPETENCIES OF TEACHER-COACHES IN
PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS

The study sought to determine the Coaching Competencies of Teacher-Coaches in
Physical Education and Sports in the public elementary and secondary school in Division of
Pangasinan II, School Year 2015-2016
Most of the teacher-coaches belong to the middle age and assertive and enthusiastic
set of teachers, hence they get a lot of teaching experience and had mellowed in their profession.
The teacher-coaches is dominated by males. wo are still neophytes in their coaching skills. Some
of them are educationally qualified and have grown professionally by pursuing higher degrees
beyond the bachelor’s degree.
Majority of the teacher-coaches are still new in the teaching profession. Most of the
teacher-coaches are still new, and may be attributed to the length of service and highest
educational preparation. This proves that teacher-coaches are conscious on making themselves
qualified and trained in the different skill areas needed to become competent.
Data revealed that teacher-coaches needs to enhance and strengthen their knowledge
and skills in the eight (8) Domains of Coaching Competency and Standard namely: Philosophy
and Ethics; Safety Injury Prevention; Physical Conditioning; Growth and Development; Teaching
and Communication; Sports Skills and Tactics; Organization and Administration; and Evaluation.
It also found out that “there are no significant difference in the levels of coaching
competence of the respondents across the profile variables”, and there were “significant
relationship between the levels of coaching competence of the respondents, along physical
conditioning and sports skills and tactics aspects, and the variable highest educational attainment”.
An enhancement program to improve competence of teacher-coaches is proposed:
Scholarship Grants for Professional Growth, Accreditation for Coaches, Research, Management
and Leadership development tension/ Innovations, Performance and Assessment Evaluation,
and Improvement of Physical Plant and Facilities and Equipment.
