HOSPITAL WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

This study focused on the hospital waste management practices of healthcare providers
in Eastern Pangasinan Hospitals, on the profile of respondents, Profile of the Hospital, hospital
waste management practices and policies of the hospital, the level of implementation of the
hospital on the healthcare waste management in terms of DENR Requirements and DOH Policies,
on the significant relationship on the waste management practices of healthcare providers across
their profile variable, the significant difference on the waste management practices of healthcare
providers across their profile variable and the programs proposed to enhance the healthcare
waste management of healthcare providers in Eastern Pangasinan Hospitals.
Based on the data gathered, the following were the findings of the study; 1) Most of the
respondents are young adults, females, single, who finished their Bachelor’s degree assigned at
the Emergency Room for 1 year and below as nurses employed in a Secondary care facility, owned
and managed by the private sector with Philhealth and DOH accreditation and with an authorized
bed capacity of 48 but with actual bed capacity of 54; 2) The respondents moderately practice
the treatment of infectious wastes and its disposal. The respondents practice Segregation,
collection and disposal of non – infectious wastes and laboratory waste management; 3) The
hospitals implement the DOH policies and DENR requirement in hospital waste management; 4)
There is a significant relationship on the waste management practices of healthcare providers
across their profile variable; 4) There is no significant difference on the waste management
practices of healthcare providers across their profile variable.
Based on the conclusions, the following measures and programs are proposed ; 1) The
healthcare workers of Eastern Pangasinan should conduct assessment on the hospital’s infectious
waste treatment; 2) Establish system and policies on infectious waste treatment and disposal;
3) Coordinate with the Provincial Health Office or other attach agencies on the provision of
appropriate waste treatment; 4) Coordinate with DOH/DENR on the training of the PCO/WMO
on waste treatment; 5) Coordinate with an approved waste transporter for the safe disposal
of waste; 6) Provide additional waste bins and other waste management supplies; 7) Conduct
regular inspection of wastes disposal unit; 8) Provide pamphlets posters and other reading
materials on proper waste management ; 9) Provide allocation of funds for the additional Trash
Bins and Hazardous waste transporter and collector; 10) . Coordinate with the PCO/WMO on the
conduct training of employees and orientation among newly hired personnel; 11) Provision of the
awards and incentive system on top performing employees in terms of waste management; 12)
Provide additional trolleys intended only for the transport of wastes; 13) Provide improvement
of the hospitals ‘storage area; 14) And conduct of follow-up and regular monitoring of wastes
management practices of the institution.
