BARRIERS IN DELIVERING HEALTH CARE SERVICES
ZAHANIE Q. DUPALE
This study determined the barriers encountered by overseas Filipino nurses in the
delivery of health care services working in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Specifically, it
determined the following: 1) profile of the respondents-overseas Filipino nurses in terms of
age, sex, highest educational attainment and workplace assigned; 2) communication barriers
encountered in relation to the different aspects such as physical barriers, emotional barriers,
language barriers and cultural barriers.
The subjects of the study were the 180 overseas Filipino nurses who are presently
working in Abu Dhabi. The Descriptive Method of Research was employed where the data
gathering used was the questionnaire-checklist which was prepared and developed by the
researcher.
Frequency counts and percentage were used to describe the profile of the respondents,
while the average weighted mean with descriptive equivalent was used to determine the barriers
encountered by the respondents in delivering health care services in Abu Dhabi.
Based on the treatment and thorough analysis of the data, the findings are as follows:
Majority of the overseas Filipino nurses belongs to the age bracket of 36-40, female dominated.
The respondents are widely distributed in the different workplace where they worked. The
communication barriers encountered have an overall weighted mean of 3.46 which is equivalent
to “often”.
Furthermore, the researcher arrived at the following conclusions: respondent are
relatively of middle age, largely dominated by female, majority obtained bachelor’s degree
that worked and assigned in different workplace. In terms of the communication barriers they
encountered in the delivery of health care services, the descriptive rating is “often”. Interventions
were proposed to lessen the common barriers.
The following are the recommendations: The proposed interventions to lessen or
diminish the communication barriers encountered by the respondents in delivering health care
services should be adapted by the nurses experiencing similar situations abroad. A well-designed
in-service training program should be made and implemented to sustain training programs in all
hospitals. Those with only bachelor’s degree are encouraged to pursue their graduate and post-
graduate courses. Other researches and studies should be conducted to look into other aspects
of the study using more variables in a wider scope.
