HEALTH PROMOTION PRACTICES AMONG WORKERS
JERWIN V. MARIANO
This study aimed to examine the level of awareness of construction workers on health
promotion in the workplace in Makati City. Specifically, this study sought answers to the following:
the profile of the respondents in terms of their age , sex, civil status, highest educational
attainment, type of work, type of health hazard and type of health risk; the level of awareness
of construction workers on health promotion in the workplace along health education, health
hazard, health risk, health screening and Linkage; the significant relationships between the
level of awareness of the construction workers on health promotion in the workplace and their
selected profile variables; the significant differences in the level of awareness of the construction
workers on health promotion in the workplace across their selected profile variables; and the
proposed intervention measure.
The following summarizes the salient findings of this investigation: Most of the
respondents work as engineers but majority belonged to the age bracket 18 to 30 years old,
males, single, high school graduates who faced physical and chemical hazards and encountered
musculoskeletal disorder, problems of the muscles and bones and occupational lung disorder.
On the level of awareness of construction workers on health promotion in the workplace along
health education, health hazard, health risk, health screening and linkage, the overall weighted
mean was 3.67, equivalent to “aware.”
Based on the foregoing findings, the following conclusions were drawn: Majority of
the respondents are young adult males, unmarried and attained secondary education who
encountered health hazards and risks. There is room for improvement of the level of awareness of
the construction workers on health promotion in the workplace specifically along health hazards
and risks. The higher the level of academic preparation, the higher is the level of awareness on
health promotion in the workplace. The proposed enhancement program is a practical approach
towards increasing the awareness level of the construction workers on the prevention of health
hazards and risks in the workplace.
In the light of the foregoing findings and conclusions, the following recommendations
are offered: The construction firm should strengthen its information and education campaign
on health promotion in the workplace by regularly conducting seminars for the construction
workers. The medium of communication used in the training programs should be the language
understood by majority of the construction workers so they can easily understand the topics
discussed by the Environmental, Health and Safety Team. Brochures written in the vernacular
should be produced and distributed to the construction workers to broaden their knowledge on
health promotion in the workplace. The construction firm should consider offering scholarships
to interested and deserving workers who would like to pursue higher studies.
