TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS
JEFFREY SADURAL
This study determined the extent of nursing care rendered to terminally ill patients by
the nurses who cared for them. It dealt on the profile of the nurses in terms of their age, sex,
civil status and highest educational attainment and the supervisors in terms of their age, sex,
civil status, highest educational and number of years in service. It also focused on the extent of
nursing care rendered to terminally ill patients by the nurses and as perceived by the supervisors
along physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspect.
Based on the gathered data, the following are the salient findings: Majority of the
nurse respondents were in the age bracket of 20-25, females, single, Bachelor’s degree holder
and in the service for less than 1 year. It is noted that majority of the supervisor respondents
were 40 years of age and above, female, married, have masteral units and in the service for
7-9 years. On the extent of nursing care rendered to terminally ill patients by the nurses along

along emotional aspect it was rated practiced and along spiritual aspect it was rated practiced.
On the extent of nursing care rendered to terminally ill patients by the nurses as perceived by
the supervisors, along physical aspect, it was rated to be highly practiced; along mental aspect
it was rated practiced; along emotional aspect it was rated practiced and along spiritual aspect
it was rated practiced. A proposed program was prepared to further enhance the care rendered
to terminally ill patients.
Based on the findings of the study, the following are the conclusions: The nurse
respondents were young and did not pursue their masteral degrees and had been working for
few months in the hospital. The supervisor respondents were older adults having their own
families and still pursuing their masteral degree and been working in the hospital for longer
period. The nurses give more extensive care in terms of their physical aspect. The supervisors
perceived the nurses to be rendering more care physically. The proposed program can be used
to enhance the care given to terminally ill patients.
Based on the conclusions of the study, the following recommendations are hereby
offered: The nurses must pursue their masteral degrees since they are still young to further
improve their care to terminally ill patients. The nurse supervisors must continue their masteral
degree program to enhance their supervisory skills. The nurses must consider more focus on
other aspects of care on mental, emotional, and spiritual aspect. The nurse supervisor must
require their nurses to focus on other aspects of care to terminally ill patients. The proposed
program can be adapted for implementation in the hospital for better care to terminally ill
patients.
