Comparing Efficiency between Cooperative and Non-cooperative Farms:
A Case of Sugar Beet Farmers of West Azerbaijan, Iran
The Conclusion:
Overall, the findings showed that the mean of efficiency scores for the

cooperative farm is more than that of non-cooperative farms, which is consistent
with other studies (e.g., Ma et al. 2018; Royer 1999). In addition, the revenue of

non-cooperative farms is relatively higher. These two results explicitly show that
non-cooperative sugar beet farmers have higher variable cost in comparison with

cooperative ones. Our findings reveal that there could be the economy of scale
among cooperatives, which is consistent with Yoo et al. (2013). However, we did

not find a credible evidence to support the economy of scale in non-cooperatives.
This study includes some limitations that offer opportunities for further

studies. For instance, it is important to examine the impacts of other variables on
the cooperative efficiency. However, it needs more information about the farms’

characteristic and the farmers. Additionally, in the future studies, the results of
different approaches to calculate efficiency can be compared.
