and or the instructions provided in the syllabus will need to be reviewed and rewritten to provide greater
clarity.
33. When asked if the Reflective Journal requirements remain the same as they are in the current
syllabus; 60 per cent of the respondents gave an affirmative response. The remaining 40 per cent felt
that:
(a) the instructions provided to teachers and candidates needed to be re-written and more
clarity provided;
(b) the journal requirements needed to be simplified so that no student is placed at a
disadvantage;
(c) a word limit should be attached to the journal;
(d) the referencing style for documentation of sources should be specified;
(e) the number of samples per Expressive Form and the minimum entries for the
developmental stages per sample needed to be specified. For example, the Reflective
Journal should include five pieces from each Expressive Form chosen. Candidates should
be required to show no less than five developmental stages per sample; and,
(f) the syllabus should clearly state whether or not candidates are required to study one or
two artists for the Reflective Journal.
34. The Review Committee reviewed and revised the guidelines provided for the Reflective Journal
in the syllabus. The syllabus when revised will now provide:
(a) details on the number of reflections required per Expressive Form. Under the section of
the Syllabus titled Format of the Examination, it is stated that Paper 4 is ‘a Reflective
Journal based on Theory, Process and Practice of Visual Arts related to TWO pieces per
Expressive Form’; and,
(b) the word count which is 1,000 in keeping with CSEC® School-Based Assessment
regulations. Under the section of the Syllabus titled Format of the Examination it is stated
that ‘the Journal must contain no more than 1,000 words and must be presented in an e-
portfolio format’.
35. The Regulations for the Reflective Journal in the syllabus were also reviewed and revised to
include a definition, guidelines for preparing the journal and the specific requirements for submitting the
journal electronically. Some of the changes made to the regulations are presented in the paragraphs
below:
The Reflective Journal is the student’s record of his/her thoughts and experiences. It captures the
student’s source of inspiration, art-making process, experiences and evaluation of what he/she
has learnt. Essentially, the Reflective Journal must include TWO journal entries for artwork from
each Expressive Form chosen by the student. Reflections must detail ‘what the student did’, ‘how
the student did it’, ‘what the student learnt’, ‘how the student felt’ and ‘what the student would
choose to do differently’ if the student had to repeat the activity. The journal entries must show
clear evidence of research undertaken inclusive of samples, photographs, interviews, critiques,
descriptive and personal statement and reflections.
The Reflective Journal should contain no more than 1,000 words and meet the requirements for
electronic submission. In this regard, journals of up to 20 MB can be uploaded to the CXC® cloud
