A Bend in the Road

On the island of St. Lucia, it was the day of the
Common Entrance Examination results and the
Grade Six students of the Patience Combined
 School were ecstatic!

We all sat patiently in the assembly hall waiting
for the moment when the principal would set her
feet into the hall. My best friend and I took front
seats next to each other, both of us anxious about
getting our results.

Her name was Charlene Phillip. She was a tall,
slender, light-skinned girl with big brown, almond
-shaped eyes and long, curly hair as dark as night.
Her face was as freckled as a ripe banana. A small
nose separated her two almond-shaped eyes and
a thin, pink pair of lips lay below, and was always
curled up in a little smile. We had been
neighbours for more than eight years and friends
since kindergarten. What was really strange was
that my mom and her mom had also been
neighbours and “bosom buddies” in their early
childhood years. What a coincidence!
