A Bend in the Road
“Neola Charlemagne” was the first name called
and all eyes flew to the back of the hall as we
watched Neola get off her chair and walk slowly
towards the front of the hall. She took the paper
from the principal’s hand and slowly stepped out
of the hall where her parents and other relatives
waited patiently for that fateful moment,
anticipated by many.
“Hoorays!” and “Yays!” could be heard from all
corners of the school. She had passed for the
school of her first choice. How proud her family
was!
More names were called, one after the other. All I
could think about was the day of the
Common Entrance Exam and how nervous I had
been when I first entered the Micoud Secondary
School. That dreadful feeling that I felt in my
stomach came back to me with full force. My
heart was beating so fast and so hard, that I could
have sworn that Charlene heard it. It was ready to
leap out of my chest and run away.
