The Man in the Forest
When my mother saw him approaching, she looked
shocked. I quickly ran ahead and explained to her.
She was still a little apprehensive when he went up
the steps and put Scatter gently on the chair.
Scatter’s mother came running over when she saw
us, because their house was in the same yard as
ours. We explained what happened and she
started to cry.
“Thank you, thank you, Mister!” she sobbed.
My mother and aunt offered Mr. Washington a
large plate of provision and salt fish souse with a
tall glass of mauby.
