The Curse

“Summer vacation, no school!” I shouted, with an
expanding smile on my face. My mother had
paid for me to go to Mr. Licorish’s Summer Camp
for one week. I was ecstatic about going, because
I had never been to Grand Etang forest, which
people say has a bottomless lake! The children
who went always talked about the amazing
adventures they had and all the scary stories
Mr. Licorish told around the camp fire.

The day finally came – the sun had a blistering
smile in the brilliant, blue, cloudless sky. I packed
my enormous backpack with clothes and camping
supplies, and went to catch the bus that was
going to take us to Grand Etang. All my friends
were already on the large, rectangular bus with
the name “BROTHER” written boldly at the front,
and we all started chatting excitedly.

We left Grand Roy, travelling along the narrow
western main road which ran along the coast and
had a view of the beautiful Caribbean Sea with its
turquoise water.
