The Curse
were, because I was scared to death myself.
I huddled closer to the boy sitting next to me and
noticed some of the other boys doing the same,
so I didn’t feel so badly.
Soon it was time to sleep. The full moon was now
high in the sky, looking like a large glowing
basketball. “Now, two people to a tent”,
Mr. Licorish instructed. Everyone paired up, but I
was left without a partner.
A beautiful girl, with a heart-shaped face, long
thick hair and a smooth cocoa brown complexion,
who I hadn’t noticed before, came up to me and
asked if she could be my tent partner. I said sure
and she introduced herself as Jasmine
Tnayuocuos, pronounced, Ta-nay-u-cus. I said,
“What an unusual surname you have, I’ve never
heard it before.”
“It’s an African name”, she said, “it means one who
cannot rest”. I thought to myself that both the
name and meaning were weird, but said nothing.
