  SECTION 1: MUSIC HISTORY AND THEORY


               GENERAL OBJECTIVES

               On completion of this Section, students should:

               1.      develop an appreciation for the broad historical background of the music studied for selected
                       musical periods;

               2.      have an informed perspective on the lives of notable composers and songwriters in the cross-
                       section of musical periods studied;

               3.      appreciate the non-musical historical contexts in which music was created and performed in a
                       wide cross-section of musical periods studied;

               4.      understand the stylistic elements of performance synonymous with a wide cross-section of
                       musical periods studied;

               5.      be aware of the socio-economic backgrounds within which music was created and performed
                       in a wide cross-section of musical periods reviewed;

               6.      be  knowledgeable  of  the  development  and  use  of  primary  and  secondary  musical  forms
                       implemented in music composition in a wide cross-section of musical periods studied;

               7.      know the pertinent philosophical premises and their chief exponents that informed musical
                       composition and performance in the musical periods reviewed;

               8.      develop  an  appreciation  for  the  evolution  of  music  throughout  history,  and  its  continued
                       transformation and application in the present and future; and,

               9.      develop an understanding of the musical instruments used and developed within a wide cross-
                       section of musical periods studied.


               SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

               On completion of this section, students should be able to:

               1.      analyse the main characteristics of musical compositions from selected musical periods;

               2.      describe the development of music traversing selected musical periods; citing the evolution of
                       socio-economic trends, musical tastes, and philosophical birthings;

               3.      describe the lives of significant composers in connection with the development of musical
                       composition;
