               4.      describe  the  creation  and  development  of  important  musical  forms  throughout  selected
                       musical periods;

               5.      assess  varied  viewpoints  written  about  musical  compositions,  composers,  and  guiding
                       philosophies in a variety of scholarly media;

               6.      construct  informed  rationales  for  the  development  of  musical  tastes  throughout  different
                       musical periods;

               7.      evaluate musical compositions and performances within a historical context using a variety of
                       established and original forms;

               8.      describe the development of music education within the musical periods studied;

               9.      compare  the  primary  methods  of  music  education  undertaken  within  the  musical  periods
                       studied; and,

               10.     critique the primary methods in which music was taught within the musical periods studied.


               CONTENT

               Selected  Musical  Periods:  Medieval,  Baroque,  Renaissance,  Classical,  Romantic,  20th  Century,
               Caribbean and present-day periods of music, including popular and avant-garde styles.

               1.      Main Characteristics of Musical Compositions

                       (a)    Medieval

                              (i)    male vocal singing, unaccompanied;

                              (ii)   single melodic line, or combination of single melodic lines;

                              (iii)   fluid tempo, seeming absence of rhythm; and,

                              (iv)   Latin text.


                       (b)    Baroque

                              (i)    abundance of ornamentation (trills, turns);

                              (ii)   tonality  established,  for  example,  abundance  of  very  clear  triads,  seventh
                                     chords, diminished seventh chords;
