CONTENT
Selected Musical Periods: Medieval, Baroque, Renaissance, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century,
Caribbean and present-day periods of music, including popular and avant-garde styles.
1. Main Characteristics of Musical Compositions
(a) Medieval
(i) male vocal singing, unaccompanied;
(ii) single melodic line, or combination of single melodic lines;
(iii) fluid tempo, seeming absence of rhythm; and,
(iv) Latin text.
(b) Baroque
(i) abundance of ornamentation (trills, turns);
(ii) tonality established, for example, abundance of very clear triads, seventh
chords, diminished seventh chords;
