hegira is 622 of our era.
Before his flight Mahomet had presented his religion by
preaching and persuasion alone. Over time as he was driven
from his native land, the wild son of the desert resolved to
defend himself and his little band. His last years were not years
of ease, although after l;adijah he took a younger wife. His last
years were full of fighting, strife, struggle and toil. It was
during these years that Mohamet decided to dictate at٤
intervals his sacred book which they named Koran or reading:
A thing to be read." Thus it has been ever since.
Above all things Islam has been a religion truly believed. No
Christians since the early ages, or only the English Puritans
more recently have ever stood by their religion as the Moslems
do by theirs, fronting time and eternity with it. This night the
watchmen on the streets of Cario when he cries out ٤Who
goes?? will hear from the passerby: " there is no God but
God." Allah akbar! Islam, sounds through the souls of dusty
millions, and missionaries preach it among Malays, black
Papuans and burtal idolaters, displacing that which is worse
for that which is far better.
For the Arabs, Persians, and many other nations it was a birth
